Dermoid Matilda

Dear Christina Winstrom,

This is Patricia, Ana’s vet, how are you?

I am writing to tell you all about the Dermoid surgery we made yesterday. The dog’s name is Matilda, and she is 3 years old.

About 2 weeks ago, her owner called Ana to ask her about a big inflamed lump at the dog’s neck. She asked him to bring the bitch to her house, and called me to check what was going on. As she was predicting it was a huge dermoid, extremely inflamed and infected, with about 15 cm of diameter. The skin was full of hematomas; its temperature was high as the bitch’s temperature. Matilda was apatic and her blood exam showed high lymphocytes count.

We put her under anti-inflammatory and antibiotics (Cephalexin) and after 2 weeks we performed the surgery. We also made an Rx and an US, to check the dermoid, and it showed that it was very deep, and it was going to the cervical spine.

The surgery was 6 hours long; the dermoid seemed to be spreaded to the subcutaneous tissue, we think it popped and we controlled it with the antibiotic. It was a grade 5 dermoid, and it reached the vertebra, but fortunately, it didn’t invade the medulla. The surgeon did a laminectomy to check the medullar space and finally we found out the dermoid had an end at the bone, without spreading anywhere else.

The bitch is ok, she went home walking, and today she is very calm without moving around. But she is very awake and paying attention in everything.

We hope it is another successful surgery like the one performed in Chino.

Best Regards,

Patricia Rabello
